Kasuga
A moment to unwind in the city.
Located in Kyoto's Nishikyo Ward, Kasuga blends a classic Showa-era coffeehouse ambience with authentic seafood fare, serving generous tuna bowls and nakaochi avocado sets alongside siphon coffee and specialty sandwiches.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Along the peaceful road leading to Oharano Shrine, Kasuga looks at first glance like a quiet, retro kissaten, yet it has earned widespread acclaim for surprisingly authentic seafood bowl set meals. The lunchtime draw for many is the maguro don set, crowned with a generous portion of lean red tuna. Sliced with substantial thickness and arranged to hide the rice entirely, the fish delivers the satisfying depth of a portside market diner right in the midst of a rustic mountain coffeehouse.
The seafood selection extends well beyond classic tuna. The nakaochi avocado don set marries tender tuna trimmings with creamy avocado slices, customized with a choice of dashi soy sauce or sesame dressing. Set meals also come with a small side dish, giving guests the delightful choice between savory chawanmushi (steamed egg custard) and house-made pudding. Other distinctive options rarely seen on a cafe menu include a nakaochi bowl with popping sea grapes and a gibasa seaweed set that highlights rich umami and a pleasant slippery texture.
Traditional kissaten fare and beverages remain an essential part of the menu. Unique house sandwiches include the Nishiyama Sandwich, packed with locally grown Oharano bamboo shoots, and the Japanese-style Wafu Sandwich wrapped in sheets of nori seaweed, alongside a comforting, gently spiced makanai curry. Siphon-brewed coffee is poured into carefully pre-warmed cups, while specialties such as house banana juice or ceremonial matcha served with a wagashi confection provide a relaxing pause before or after your meal.
Free parking is provided directly in front of the cafe and nearby, making Kasuga an easy stop during a scenic drive or walking tour of Nishikyo. Because dishes are prepared individually to order, service can take some time during busy hours. Payment is strictly cash-only, so arriving with yen on hand and time to linger ensures the best experience.
